In Times Like These Lyrics

In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

In times like these I have a Savior,
In times like these I have an anchor;
I'm very sure, I'm very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes He's the One,
This Rock is Jesus, the only One;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock
!

The Story

Ruth Caye Jones was the wife of a minister and also the mother of five. While we constantly hear of wars and rumors of wars today, it's sometimes easy to forget that things were much worse in the dark days of World War II. The US casualty count of the war in Afghanistan recently reached 2,000, a number far, far too great. And yet during World War II, over 400,000 young US soldiers lost their lives. And that number itself was just a small part of the 78 million people who died worldwide.

It was during this time that Mother Jones, as she came to be known, reflected on the words of 2 Timothy 3:1, took a small notepad from her apron pocket, and jotted down the words and music to "In Times Like These", exactly as we sing them today.

As with many great hymns of the era, In Times Like These was a popular choice of George Beverly Shea to be sung at Billy Graham Crusades. The first time Jones heard her song sung on television, tears came to her eyes. "I can't believe I had any part in writing this song. I just feel that God gave it to me, and I gave it to the world."

Today, we still live in perilous times. And unlike in the 1940s, we as a society have grown further and further from God. The Solid Rock is still there and always has been, but we as a people have chosen to throw our anchor on sinking sand.

So the words that Mother Jones wrote 50 years ago ring more true today than they ever have. In our lives, whether we're talking about us as a society or within our own families, we will encounter storms of life, some which threaten to tear our whole ships apart. But if your anchor grips onto the solid rock, there is no storm that can destroy you.
