Never Alone Lyrics

I've seen the lightning flashing and heard the thunder roll;
I've felt sin's breakers dashing, trying to conquer my soul;
I've heard the voice of Jesus telling me still to fight on;
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone;
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

The world's fierce winds are blowing, temptations are sharp and keen;
I feel a peace in knowing my Savior stands between;
He stands to shield me from danger when earthly friends are gone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone;
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

When in affliction's valley, I'm treading the road of care,
My Savior helps me to carry my cross when heavy to bear;
My feet entangled with briars, ready to cast me down;
My Savior whispered His promise Never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone;
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

He died for me on the mountain, for me they pierced His side,
For me He opened that fountain, the crimson, cleansing tide;
For me He waiteth in glory, seated upon His throne;
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone;
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

He gives me the sweet promise that He will come again,

And when He reigns in glory and I to heaven attain;

I shall in that dear country be numbered with His own,

And live with Him forever, never, no never alone.

No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone;
No, never alone, no, never alone,
He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone.

The Story

Ludie Carrington Day Pickett was born in 1867. She was the wife of Leander Lycurgus Pickett, a Methodist evangelist who himself wrote music or lyrics for several hymns.The two of them were active in the Methodist church and in the founding of Asbury College in Kentucky (now Asbury University). Their son Jarrell W. Pickett went on to serve as a missionary to India for 46 years who, among other things, brought unprecedented medical care to India, organized volunteer work in Delhi, and met with presidents (Truman and Eisenhower) and prime ministers (Nehru) alike.

I can almost picture the scene on a warm summer night in Kentucky at the end of the 19th century where groups of people from all around would gather together for a revival meeting, and the gathering would sing this song for the very first time. What a scene of pure and simple joy it must have been.

The world has changed a lot in 115 years, but the human condition hasn't. While we enjoy the comforts of the 21st century, life is still no less of a struggle. Things may be going smoothly for us, but then the storms of life hit, with loud thunder, frightening lightning, and waves crashing over the side of the ship.

And yet Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. No matter the situation you find yourself in, He did promise never to leave you alone, and He keeps His promises. There are times so dark and scary that even your family or your friends can't understand or help, even though they desperately want to. But at those moments, get on your knees and pour out yourself to Jesus. Cast your burden on Him, because He cares for you.
