Feedback requested: Wyatt sings southern gospel from Happy Goodmans, Rambos, Dixie Echoes

This is the discussion board to share thoughts, musings, and questions on Christian hymns in general.

Post your favorite hymns and hymn stories. I'll also try to create sticky threads for popular topics that you can respond to.

If you're looking for hymn lyrics, please go to the Hymn Lyrics - Search Request board.

Also... how do I get to the hymn discussion form, I don't see that option on here.
That's the reason why I put it on the hymn help forum.

Hi Wyatt,

I'm pretty good with search engines, so you're going to have to trust me on this one :) It's better if you pick one thread and post all your new performances to the thread. If you post multiple threads, they'll get lost.

Songofmyheart pasted the link to the Hymn Discussion board, but as I said in my last post, I'd be happy to keep your thread on the Lyrics board, at least for a while, since this one gets a lot more visibility (again, I'm going to work on that other one). I normally wouldn't do this, but I appreciate your initiative and your guts.

Here's some more feedback and suggestions which I hope is helpful:

1) Here's some advice on where to get good objective feedback. If you have access to an AI LLM like ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, or Gemini, upload a video of you singing and ask IT for constructive feedback. Don't just say "critique my singing", but leave it a detailed prompt such as these:

Code: Select all

Please listen like a kind but honest southern gospel vocal coach. Tell me what I’m doing well, where my singing sounds authentically southern gospel, and where I could improve. Comment on my pitch, timing, diction, phrasing, breath control, projection, emotion, storytelling, vibrato, and how well I fit the style. Please explain things in simple language a kid can understand. Be encouraging, specific, and constructive. Give me 3 things I did well, 3 things to work on, and 3 practice tips.
or

Code: Select all

Please critique my singing in the style of southern gospel. Tell me whether I sound more like a lead singer, tenor, baritone, or bass. Also tell me if my voice sounds too pop, too nasal, too flat, too forced, or just right for the style. Be gentle but truthful, and explain your feedback in a way that helps a young singer improve.
You'll be surprised at how spot-on it is, and it helps avoid the awkwardness of strangers (who may be too harsh) or friends (who may not be harsh enough) giving you feedback. An LLM can't really judge intangibles like whether your performance is touching people's hearts—but it will give very good advice on things like mechanics and technique (intonation, breath control, diction, etc.)

2) Let's think of a better name for this thread than "Hello, read this and please respond". I added a little bit more detail, but I'd like to change it to something like "Feedback requested: Wyatt sings southern gospel from Happy Goodmans, Rambos, Dixie Echoes". That'll give you a better chance of showing up on search engines for people who are interested in these songs. LMK if it's okay for me to make that change, and if you can think of something better.

3) Start your own social media accounts. TikTok is a good once since it looks like you already have connections there—you'll want to get your own account so you can build up your own presence vs. getting lost amid your friend's videos. YouTube is another one, but you'll want to make sure your performances are a bit more polished before you start posting there. When you get to YouTube, you'll want to give your video a YouTube title that's the name of the song + your name. You'll also want to write a good description if you're looking for feedback. When the time comes, you're welcome to post links to your performances from here on the relevant thread if it exists (for example, if someone was looking for lyrics from one of these artists)

4) See my advice in the other post about investing in good audio equipment and working on your "stage presence". Look up YouTube videos of the original artists and popular cover versions and observe not just their singing quality but how they present and carry themselves. That's a big part of performance too.

Like I said, for now please keep your links to this post; don't worry, it'll get seen by a lot of people. But trust me when I saw a lot more people will see it if you put it on YouTube when you're ready.

God bless,
Steve

I would like to say thank you so much for your feedback, and yes it's ok if you make that title change to the one you have listed, I find that title very fitting and it's perfect.

How can I improve my posture for stage actions? I just have so many questions to ask in a little amount of time, if you get what I'm saying, that's usually how I am.

I have already tried chat gpt and It didn't work but that's no biggie. I'm going to try the others and see how they are.
Thank you so much Steve.- Wyatt.

Hi Wyatt,

Like I said, I'm not a professional singing coach so I'm not the best to give advice. Hopefully some people who are professionals might see this and chime in. If not, like I said, a good LLM can help.

For ChatGPT, you may need to save the video from TikTok to your computer and then upload it—it sometimes has problems accessing Web sites like TikTok.

If that doesn't work, you can try Google Gemini, Grok or Claude. Grok isn''t a bad option if you plan on starting an X (formerly Twitter) account. Most of them will let you try a few questions for free and then ask you to pay if you exceed their usage limits.

If you've never used an LLM, it's like talking to a person for advice...sometimes AI can get things very wrong, but for basic questions (like asking it to critique your performance or tips on improving) it'll usually give pretty good advice.

Let me know how it goes! Good luck!
Steve

Hey Wyatt,

Just posted lyrics to One Way to Gloryland here:

Here are some links on YouTube to some of their recordings.

There really is nothing in modern music that comes close to these classics!

Btw, is there any way that a person that has experience singing could view my work.

My greatest inspiration for old southern Gospel has passed away, her name Was Glenda Ruth Peters, you may look up her obituary, I was one of her pallbearers, she sang in the Church Trio called " The Pleasant Hill Trio" It was her and her two sisters.

She was a lifetime member of Pleasant Hill Pentecostal Church, in Kossuth MS ever since- that I know of 1959. She had a brain aneurysm and a brain bleed; she could get around good and was all there in mind and physically. The bad thing is, is that she felt amazing and got a great report from the doctor and was going to come up and see me; but then she got dizzy and fell down and was unresponsive ever since. She was put on life support, and the only thing keeping her alive was the breathing machine, my papaw- Donnie, decided that after 15 mins I had left the ICU- I had been in there 2 times to talk to her and to say goodbye. To take her off of life support which she had been on for 2 days. I came back to sing "Jesus will outshine them all"
as she took her final breath. Now we have done all of the activities that are needed for a funeral and she is buried.

I had invited 4 friends. Jesse, Caleb P.J and Jason, and only Jason came and stayed for 2 hours during visitation, that was the only time he could come. But he- I believe, He's a good friend.
