The first appearance of the Peace Prayer occurred in France in 1912 in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell). It was published in Paris by a Catholic association known as La Ligue de la Sainte-Messe (The Holy Mass League), founded in 1901 by a French priest, Father Esther Bouquerel (1855-1923). The prayer bore the title of 'Belle prière à faire pendant la messe' (A Beautiful Prayer to Say During the Mass), and was published anonymously. The author could possibly have been Father Bouquerel himself, but the identity of the author remains a mystery.

Actually I recently read that an Irish Poet/writer wrote the words. As we are speaking I am trying to find the article where they had mentioned the authors name. There is also a newer, very beautiful and spiritual recording by an Sikh artist by the name of Snatam Kaur. Talking about being in touch with God. All her recordings are heavenly and I love them.

Take a listen, it starts out with "foreign" sounding words, but keep listening.

I thought this was going to be the song I learned in church as a child...  "It is in giving that we receive.  It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.  It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.  Make me an instrument of your peace.  I want to know what it's like to follow you.  When men look at me, I want them to see the light of the world inside."

I am looking for the version that is sung by what sounds like a male group.
Later possibly even  a congregation getting involved.
It is 4:58 in length.
It opens with a guitar with a male singing alone.
I have only found it on Youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-A0UkbO9dD0&am ...

I do not know who sings it or what CD/album it came from.
I would really like to find out who it is and any other information.
I hope somebody can help!!

Hi everyone,

I have been searching for a song for the longest time and I hope someone will be able to help me find it.  It's called "We are climbing Jacob's ladder".  This version is very upbeat and was originally sung by Doris Acres and the Skyrockets I believe.  I sang this song in primary school and from what I understand, this song was on a 45 record at some point.  I am desperate to find, so if you know this version, please send to me!  Thanks

For any of you looking for a score for Instruments of your peace you can easily find it in Hosanna Book #8 from Integrity Music - I forget the exact page #.  It is scored for 4-part harmony just as it was done by the mixed choir (it was performed by both adults and the boys choir) in Johannesburg shortly after apartheid ended.  I used to use this version all the time when i was a church worship leader.  It spoke to me!

Hello, my name is Paul,

I am looking for a song I heard on a Christian Radio Station back in the early 1990's.  I always heard it when I was driving and with no cell phones in those days I was not able to call in and ask for details.

It was on par with something the Maranatha Singers would do. The lyrics are from a prayer by St. Francis Assisi as follows:

..when men look at me, I want them to see, the light of the world in me.

Thank you for your help,

A version of the song is called "Instruments of Peace"
as sung by Discovery Singers / Dámaris Carbaugh
on an old 1997 audio cassette
called "Forgiveness" by Discovery Singers,
and published by Discovery House Music, 1997.

It is the second song on Side A.
