Hello all - I am trying to find a setting of the Prayer of St. Francis that I had a long time ago...it is in E-Flat Minor...it's for piano and voice...the refrain is "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace....Lord, make me an instrument of your peace."  The song starts right into the first verse (after a 4 or 8 bar intro) "Where there is hatred, let me bring love...where there is injury let me bring pardon...)  I think the song was written in the early 1990s...I can't remember the composer, but at the top of the page I remember the composer said he was writing this for a friend's wedding Mass.  ANY help is greatly appreciated!!  Pls. email me at ernstgang@yahoo.com

I don't know if this is the song you're looking for, but I heard a version recorded in South Africa in the early 1990s by either Maranatha or Integrity Singers.  I think it was sung by the Johannesburg Boys Choir. The lyrics were:

Chorus:
Lord, Make us instruments of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are your instruments of peace.

Where there is hatred, we will show his love
Where there is injury, we will never judge
Where there is striving, we will speak his peace
To the millions crying for release,
We will be his instruments of peace

Lord, Make us instruments of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are your instruments of peace.

Where there is blindness, we will pray for sight
where there is darkness, we will shine his light
Where there is sadness, we will bear their grief
To the millions crying for relief,
We will be your instruments of peace.

Make me a channel of your peace
where there is hatred let me bring your love:
Where there is injury, your pardon Lord;
and where there's doubt, true faith in you.

Chorus: O Master grant that I may never seek
So much to be consoled as to console;
To be understood as to understand;
To be loved as to love wih all my soul.

Make me a channel of your peace.
Where there's despair in life let me bring hope;
Where there is darkness only light;
And where there's sadness, ever joy.

Make me a channel of your peace.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
In giving to all men that we receive.
And in dying that we're born to eternal life.

This is an old song I learned in elementary school in the 60's. It has always been a favorite.  Just wanted to clarify that it wasn't written in the 1990's.  We sang it as a memorial when JFK was shot.

The song on the "Rejoice Africa" Integrity recording was based on the Prayer of St. Frances.  It was a beautiful rendition of the song and proves that the old hymns if appropriately updated to today's musical idioms still have much power.

I found this site while searching for the title "Instruments of Peace" to use as a domain name for a Christian band I want to start under the same name.  Unfortunately the domain name is taken.  :-(

I will continue searching and praying.

This is a faboulous and beautifull song,it's more, it's the most beautifull way to pray to God. It was San Francisco de Assisi who made it. And his love was so big, so deep that we can remember this pray till today.... I hope every man in this world can feel someday what he felt!!!
Love, really love for all, for every one...

There are two other versions of this prayer that have not been mentioned, the most well known being "Eternal Life"-which is considered a classic of sacred song literature and should be fairly easy to find.  The other version is called "Prayer for Peace," and is the final song in the Youth Musical "Celebrate Life" (first published in the early 70s and still being used by church youth choirs today.

The boys choir from south africa sang me to tears.  They tore my heart and I weep for the curelty in Niger Delta, Nigeria, West Africa.
How innocent our children are; but how reckless they die. I can't write enough how I feel.  I will continue to teach my pupils to sing this song in any primary or secondry school I find myself a music teacher.
