I am utterly frustrated.  I have the tune and some of the words of my favourite childhood choir hymns going round and round in my head.  I've been singing it for years, and for the life of me I can't think of the first verse.  I've tried searching various websites, but as I also don't know the name of it I haven't had any luck.   I would really like to teach it to my daughter.  The chours is: "He sent me to give the good news to the poor, tell prisioners that they are prisioners no more, tell blind people that they can see, and set the downtrodden free, and go tell everyone the news that the kingdom of God has come".  I'd appreciate any help!!

Hi Guest,

After searching the Web, I found this one:

God’s Spirit is in my heart,
He has called me and set me apart.
This is what I have to do,
what I have to do.

He sent me to give the Good News to the poor,
Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more,
Tell blind people that they can see,
And set the downtrodden free
And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come,
And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come.

Just as the Father sent me,
So I’m sending you out to be
My witnesses throughout the world,
The whole of the world.

Don’t worry what you have to say,
Don’t worry because on that day
God’s Spirit will speak in your heart,
Will speak in your heart.

Hope this is it. God bless!

Dear Steve,
Thanks a million for this.  It's the right one!
I have rediscovered religion after many absent years and find that worship through music is most powerful for me.  I am enjoying all of my choir days music all over again.
God Bless,
Miriam.

Hi Steve and Miriam,
this is what I have of this song....a few extra verses.  God Bless....JJ

1. God’s Spirit is in my heart
He has called me and set me apart
This is what I have to do
What I have to do

REFRAIN:
He sent me to give the Good News to the poor
Tell prisoners that they are prisoners no more
Tell blind people that they can see
And set the down-trodden free
And go tell everyone the news that the Kingdom of God has come
And go tell everyone the news that God’s kingdom has come

2. Just as the Father sent me
So I’m sending you out to be
My witnesses throughout the world
The whole of the world

3. Don’t carry a load in your pack
You don’t need two shirts on your back
A workman can earn his own keep
Can earn his own keep

4. Don’t worry what you have to say
Don’t worry because on that day
God’s Spirit will speak in your heart
Will speak in your heart

So happy I found this hymn again....
The refrain was in my heart for years since I learned it in 1977, when I was on the way to be a missionary....
" And go tell everyone...."   until the whole world knows: HE IS LORD!!

I learnt this hymn 40 years ago…. soon the words became my part of my life…. part of my being….

Whenever I felt “alone”…. “misunderstood”….  i sang it in the silence of my heart…..

I began living out the words in my daily life…. Soon after I learnt the hymn…..

Since the last 10 years I’ve being living out the words more forcefully….. moving against the currents more often then not……. In the 2 two years have been living it out in a place where it is required the most……………. Karbi Anglong District of Assam – India.

am enjoying doing it….. for the sake of the “kingdom” because I believe …. All are equals …. All are free…….

Does anyone know if this hymn has been adapted from part of the Bible? and if so where?! Many thanks

Hi Guest,

The first part of the hymn looks like it's inspired by Luke 4:18 and 19, where Jesus, at the beginning of His ministry, himself quoted from Isaiah 61:1,2.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

The third verse looks like it's from John 20:21, where Jesus sent His own disciples into the world.

'Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you."'

The final verse looks like it's inspired by Mark 13:11, where Jesus is instructing His disciples about the end times.

"Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit."

Hope it helps! God bless!

This morning, as I was considering where would Jesus go in today's world,  I had to consider the image I have of Him from the Gospels: poor, uneducated (by modern standards), simple laborer, Infinite Wisdom, God Almighty.  I am Roman Catholic, and today bishops, (Cardinals) of the Church are gathered in Rome to elect another Pope.  Would He descend and hang out among the Italian frescoes, statues, Bernini's columns, stare up at the Sistine chapel's paintings.  Would He come here?  I thought of Bethlehem and Nazareth Jerusalem, Capernaum, Bethsaida.  Hmmm.  "Poor, hungry, sick, orphan, downcast  where would I find a place like this  today, I thought "the slums of the world's cities."  Sub-Saharan Africa. Yes!  Right then, the words and the melody of this song jumped into my mind.  All of those lines from the song fit right in to the African lands and its people.  Amazing, Inspiring Holy Spirit of Jesus.  Perhaps the next Pope will be African

Amazing.  I've been humming this for weeks so I decided to look for it. We sang it at school in the seventies and it sooooo relevant in my life today.  God bless you all

For years now I have been searching what my purpose is in my life. I sat down a few weeks ago and started writing down what I thought my purpose was in life and after some writing the chorus of this song just poped into my head from nowhere. You can imagine how shocked I was. I dont know where to start but I believe God will mske the way known to me. Thank you posting the full hymn and Bible verses where this hymn wad derived. God Bless.
