The lirics I can remember are:
Yahwah I know you are near,
Standing always at my side.....

I think these are the lyrics you're looking for:

You Are Near

1.
Yahweh, I know you are near,
standing always at my side.
You guard me from the foe,
and you lead me in ways everlasting.

Lord, you have searched my heart,
and you know when I sit and when I stand.
Your hand is upon me protecting me from death,
keeping me from harm.

2.
Where can I run from Your love?
If I climb to the heavens You are there;
If I fly to the sunrise or sail beyond the sea,
still I'd find You there.

3.
You know my heart and its ways,
you who formed me before I was born
in the secret of darkness before I saw the sun
in my mother's womb.

4.
Marvelous to me are Your works;
how profound are Your thoughts, my Lord.
Even if I could count them, they number as the stars,
You would still be there.

Sheet music is available here:

Hope it helps. God bless!

Thank you Steve.

I sing parts of this song to my children as a lullaby also.  I thought to check online to see if I could find all the lyrics (We are living in Portugal).  I can't wait to sing all the words to my children tomorrow night!

Thanks again!  Michelle

Thank you Steve.  My husband and I go to a senior community on Sunday morning to do THE LITURGY OF THE WORD with Holy Communion.  We have started to incorprate music and found that our shut ins love to sing along but they can't remember all the words.  So now we are all better able to participate with song and prayer at our service.

To Katie - not exactly sure when it was written, but it has a copyright of 1971.  Dan Schutte wrote both the words and music.

Thanks Steve for the lyrics of this song!  I have been away from my home country for some time now and I always have this feeling of "being alone in a foreign country" BUT singing this song to myself gives me the security I badly need!

Dan Schutte makes the best gospel songs. We sang his songs during our confirmation and graduation. I know I'm like a year late but may I recommend Eagle's Wings. I think it's also his piece. Quite nice.

Thanks for helping.  It's been a long time since I sang this song for my high school graduation.  I had forgotten the lyrics and this really helped.  Have a Happy New year!

This was written by Dan Schutte, a Jesuit, in the early seventies and was sang widely in the Catholic Charistmatic renewal in early days, and eventually the larger church.
