Coming Home

Coming Home Lyrics

I've wandered far away from God,

Now I'm coming home;

The paths of sin too long I've trod,

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I'm coming home.

I've wasted many precious years,

Now I'm coming home;

I now repent with bitter tears,

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I’m coming home.

I'm tired of sin and straying, Lord,

Now I'm coming home;

I'll trust Thy love, believe Thy Word,

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I’m coming home.

My soul is sick, my heart is sore,

Now I'm coming home;

My strength renew, my hope restore,

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I’m coming home.

My only hope, my only plea,

Now I'm coming home;

That Jesus died, and died for me.

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I’m coming home.

I need His cleansing blood, I know,

Now I'm coming home;

O wash me whiter than the snow,

Lord, I'm coming home.

Coming home, coming home, Nevermore to roam,

Open wide Thine arms of love, Lord, I’m coming home.

The Story

Even though he lived over 100 years ago, many of the hymns of William Kirkpatrick are still favorites today and will probably still be favorites 100 years from now. Hymns like He Hideth My Soul, Jesus Saves, and Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus are just a few of the amazing hymns that are not just beautiful, but also chock full of the power of God's word.

But even though hymn writing in his day was a popular endeavor and in many cases a profitable one, William Kirkpatrick never lost sight of the purpose of the hymns he was writing. While leading a camp meeting one day, he listened to the soloist that was hired to sing for the event. While the soloist had a beautiful voice and could sing with great expression and feeling, Kirkpatrick was saddened that as soon as the soloist was finished with his assigned songs, he would leave without staying to hear to the preacher's message. Kirkpatrick feared that the young man didn't know Christ, and began to earnestly for the soloist, that God would somehow reach him.

One evening as he was praying the words to this hymn came to his head. He jotted them down and that same night handed the lyrics and the tune to the soloist. As the soloist sang, he was visibly moved and decided to stay for the sermon. That night, at the atlar call, he got up, went to the front of the tent, and accepted Jesus.

The next time you sing this hymn, or any hymn, don't worry about how beautiful your voice sounds or how perfect your pitch is. Instead, let the words enter deep into your heart and then no matter how you sound, you'll be amazed at how the hymn can touch your soul.
