About Hymn Lyrics dot Net

While all worship music is special, there's something particularly special about gospel hymns, those written in the 1800s and 1900s that are a part of every church hymnal. Hymns written before this time tended to be chants that sound rather dull and repetitive (by today's standards at least--heaven knows that the earliest hymn writers were accused of being "wild"). And while I love many contemporary worship songs, truth be told, sometimes they come off as a little simplistic and shallow. Not that there's anything wrong with that--as I like to say, sometimes you need a little "mental dessert".

But one thing about gospel hymns is that practically all of them are very richly based in the Word of God, in many cases making deep theological concepts come to life. Something else I noticed is that many of the hymn writers who wrote these hymns wrote the hymns in the midst of deep pain in their lives. They say that some of the greatest things come out of the midst of the deepest suffering, and in many of these hymns you can feel the power of the words, drawn out from times when the hymn writers were going through deep pain but chose to put their faith and hope in Jesus Christ. While the hymn writers are mostly gone, their words serve as continual testimony--and encourgement--to us.

My goal here is to bring to you some of the most popular hymns that get requested over and over again. I know there are a lot of hymn sites out there, but my goal is to only provide you with the most popular hymns, and also to provide a lot of extra things all in one place: scripture references, guitar chords, and free printable sheet music and MIDI files. I've also compiled some of the most popular YouTube videos on the hymn with performances from everyone from professional artists to "regular folk", as well as links to iTunes if you'd like to buy a copy. I've also included some history and commentary on the hymns, as well as a way for you to leave commentary yourself.
